Grand Performances, the longest-running presenter of high-quality free programs in downtown LA, will culminate its 32nd Annual Summer Series at California Plaza on August 18th, 2018.  The program celebrates diversity through performances that cover world beat, pop, Latinx, Indigenous US, and classical, among others.  The remaining season schedule is listed below.

Friday, August 10 at 8 p.m. | Hip Hop/Electronic: Indigenous Music & Dance / Classic Roots & Natasha Fisher | Nakotah LaRance

This evening will bring together Canadian indigenous artists Classic Roots (Anishinaabe/traditional music/electronic) and Natasha Fisher (Ojibway/Aboriginal-influenced electronic pop R&B) with Native American artist Nakotah Larance (OhKay Owingeh/Hoop and Hip Hop Hoop Dance Champion).

 

Saturday, August 11 at 8 p.m.  | El Vez & Phranc

Two L.A. musical legends will do some velvety crooning and glittering folk on a hot August night. Fun, whip-smart lyrics that make you think, coupled with the best three-minute pop melodies ever.

 

Sunday August 12 at 8 p.m. | Supernova | LACO String Quartet

Supernova premieres a four-movement piece titled “Suite for Los Angeles.” Composed and performed by the ensemble – Jacob Szekely, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Paul Jacob Cartwright, and Robert Anderson – with added loops, pedals, electronics.

In addition, The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra will also perform. Assembled by four of their finest string players; Connie Kupka, David Speltz, Brendan Speltz, and Florence Titmus will deliver a program of classics, new music and festive festival fare that demonstrates their virtuosity.

 

Friday, August 17 at 8 p.m. | La Marisoul curates: The California Feetwarmers & Hermanos Herrera

Curated by La Marisoul Hernández, lead singer of La Santa Cecilia, this night shines a light on two of her favorite local bands – The California Feetwarmers, equal parts New Orleans jazz and ragtime, and Hermanos Herrera, playing modern versions of Son Huasteco, Son Jarocho, and música Norteña.

 

Saturday, August 18 at 8 p.m. | Sogand

Born in Iran and raised in Germany, Sogand is an Iranian underground hip-hop artist known for her soulful and sultry voice and remarkable capability of singing in both Persian and German. She stylishly blends rap, R&B, jazz, funk, blues and pop into her music.

The night will begin with a performance by Omid Walizadeh, an independent electronic music producer/DJ from Los Angeles. As a 30 year veteran of the Los Angeles underground hip hop scene, Omid’s latest work draws heavily from his Iranian background.
