Raise your hand if you miss going to A Noise Within (ANW) theater! Since we’re not ready yet to gather indoors, ANW has created high-quality films of its two stage productions for this spring 2021 season. The first one – AN ILIAD – is now streaming.
This version of AN ILIAD is Lisa Peterson and Denis O’Hare’s modern-day retelling of Homer’s epic poem, directed by Julia Rodriguez-Elliott. It will stream through May 16 on Fridays at 7 pm, Saturdays at 6 pm and 8 pm, and Sundays at 2 pm. From the comfort of home, you can enjoy the same artistry and production elements that you expect from ANW’s theater – including lighting, sound, and costumes. Additionally, award-winning filmmaker Andressa Cordeiro joined as Director of Photography to ensure a visually compelling take of this classic story.
Deborah Strang and Geoff Elliott alternate performances as the Poet in this one-person show that re-lives and recounts bloodshed through hundreds of years.
Have you read Homer’s Iliad? Did it sound like a collection of stories, however precious, of a strange world long, long gone? It did to me. The magic of this play, and the reason why you should watch it, is that it retells the main stories in the original poem while helping you to connect them to what is going on today, in our world. Should a 10-year-war sound like mythology to us, really? How about a plague? Turns out that Achilles and Hector’s world looked like ours plenty.

.
The performance I watched (with Elliott as the Poet) was outstanding. The one-hour-and-45-minutes went by fast, enhanced by the ability to stop the stream for quick refills of wine. I encourage you to watch this show. You’ll gain a new appreciation for the Iliad.
Tickets to stream are $25, available at anoisewithin.org. Performance schedule follows:
