William Shakespeare’s All’s Well That Ends Well is now performing at A Noise Within Theatre (ANW), in Pasadena, through March 6, 2022. The play is directed by Nike Doukas.
Helen, humiliated by the man she loves, travels, plans, and uses extraordinary powers to ensure that her story “ends well.” Understand “ending well” to mean that she ultimately gets her man. The quick turnaround that the reluctant husband makes at the end of the play might feel a bit fantastic, but in the process The Bard gives us spectacular women defying both the patriarchy and the entitlement of the upper class.
This production stays close to the original text, while some characters first intended for males – like the Duke of Florence, Rinaldo, and The Fool – are performed by female actors. The cast of about fifteen is diverse and talented, including several ANW resident artists that you might recognize (such as Rafael Goldstein performing a hilarious Peroles), and a few new faces debuting with the company, like Mark Jude Sullivan playing Bertram.
All’s Well That Ends Well is performing Thursday through Sunday through March 6, 2022. It’s an enjoyable comedy (and perhaps Shakespeare’s naughtiest) that brings along lots of laughter.
