Theater is back in-person at La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts, and the musical on stage couldn’t be any more on point! THE SOUND OF MUSIC and its unforgettable songs will perform through May 15, 2022, directed by Glenn Casale.
The spirited story of Maria and the von Trapp Family hardly needs an introduction after decades of thrilling audiences with tunes like “My Favorite Things,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Edelweiss,” “Do-Re-Mi,” and its iconic title song. At La Mirada, they are all wonderfully performed by a 17-piece orchestra (directed by Dennis Castellano), and enhanced by the theater’s new, state of the art, sound system.
Diane Phelan (Broadway: The King and I & South Pacific at Lincoln Center) is “Maria;” Christopher Carl (Broadway: South Pacific at Lincoln Center, Mamma Mia!) is “Captain von Trapp;” and Grammy nominee Suzanna Guzmán (The King and I with Yul Brynner, Bizet’s Carmen) is “Mother Abbess.” These powerhouse voices are supported by a large cast of talented singers, all of whom get their moments to shine. Six-year-old Kayla Anjali steals the heart of the audience with her confident performance as the little “Gretl von Trapp,” and Oliver Stewart’s falsetto surprises and delights as he embodies “Kurt von Trapp” in what is his first professional performance.
We have gotten used to delightful productions at La Mirada Theatre and this one is no different. The stage is particularly impressive for THE SOUND OF MUSIC, as it (seemingly) effortlessly transforms from an abbey and from the von Trapp mansion to the green hills of Austria, and back, thanks to Adam Koch’s Scenic Design and Jared Sayeg’s Lighting Design.
THE SOUND OF MUSIC at La Mirada Theatre is a perfect way to celebrate that we can once again gather to be inspired by music and song. I highly recommend it.
