Africatown is a small city in Mobile, AL, with an important history. The last documented slave ship is hidden under the delta waters nearby, and its population includes several descendants of the people who were forcefully brought from Africa on it. The picture below gives you more details about how Africatown became a haven for the eventually freed Clotilda captives, where they were able to continue practicing their African traditions.

Today, Africatown is integrated with the City of Mobile. It looks like a normal, quiet neighborhood, where people live regular lives, but with a past that can’t be overlooked. In the oldest (northern) part of the Africatown Graveyard rest a few people who came on the Clotilda ship. Cudjol Kazoola Lewis has an important marker now, since he was the last survivor of those who were brought on the ship that remained in Africatown and actually helped establish it.
The story of the Clotilda and the people of Africatown is told in the documentary feature film Descendant (2022), which you can watch on Netflix. The film is currently shortlisted for a 2023 Oscar award.
