There’s a school in Semmes, AL, that has been there since 1902. That’s over 120 years old!, but because it has been shown love over the years, it still serves periodically as a hands-on, history-learning, school.

Thomas Jefferson Howell donated the land for a school and a church. The original school was built, later moved across the street, and eventually brought back to its original location. It’s adorable, but it’s usually locked. Arrangements can be made for school trips or adult visiting groups, but they must be done ahead of time.
Unlike the school, the original church is gone. There is, however, a replica that can be rented out for weddings and other events. This replica is usually locked as well.
Other buildings in the park are an old style home, a general store, a well, a gazebo, and a see-saw set. The park is very small so (unless you live around the corner) make it worth your trip by taking a lunch to enjoy at one of the two picnic tables available.
Semmes School is listed in the Alabama Register of Historical Landmarks. It’s located at 3871 Wulff Road, Semmes, AL 36575. Learn more about Semmes Heritage Park here.
