If you like art, you will appreciate THE LAST VERMEER, a film that was released in the U.S. just a couple of weeks ago. The movie is based on a real life story, adapted from the book The Last Vermeer: Unvarnishing the Legend of Master Forger Han van Meegeren, by Jonathan Lopez.
THE LAST VERMEER introduces you to Han van Meegeren (played by Guy Pearce), a talented painter who can forge the works and the style of acclaimed artists (including Vermeer) and fool others into paying outrageous prices for them. It also stars Claes Bang as Joseph Piller, a Dutch Jew who after the war is assigned to identify and redistribute stolen art. In this pursuit he meets van Meegeren, who is initially suspected of collaborating (and selling art) to the Nazis – a crime punishable by death. However, as Piller interacts with van Meegeren, the former becomes convinced of the latter’s innocence and ends up doing what he can to save his life instead.
THE LAST VERMEER is an interesting film that will acquaint you with a proficient man that just wanted some credit and who ended up getting at least some of it in court. It’s is two-hours long, rated R for language and brief nudity, and directed by Dan Friedkin. It’s showing in theaters and online here.
