The Right Words (2021) is a 15-minute, live-action short film directed by Adrian Moyse Dullin that is currently shortlisted for a 2023 Oscar award.
The short is set on a school bus on the way back from class, with all the characters that you’d remember from your own school days – the cool kids, the bullies, the pretty girls, and so on. An older sister harasses her brother pushing him to talk to his crush, torturing him by disclosing his poetry on Snapchat, in an exchange that when you’re older seems silly, but that is everything when you’re in your mid-teens.
The teenagers acting in this film were new to the camera. They are non-actors that received training for a month so that they could properly project their characters. As the director explains, the short is a mixture of Rom-Com and Thriller genres that tries to make the viewer feel as if you are on the bus during the action. The Right Words is competing for an Academy Award along 14 other live-action shorts.
