During the month of March 2023, I had the pleasure of listening to seven audiobooks across various genres. From steamy romance to haunting psychological thrillers, these stories captivated me with their compelling characters, richly evocative settings, and unforgettable plot twists. Below I provide a brief overview of each of the audiobooks I listened to. The links are live in case any of them catch your interest.
Romance
Love and Other Words by Christina Lauren: This charming novel explores the deep, complicated, and sometimes painful bond between Macy and Elliot, childhood friends who reunite years later as adults. As they navigate their feelings and confront long-buried secrets, the reader is swept up in a beautiful, emotional story that explores the power of love and the importance of communication. Note that this book is what you’d call “spicy,” with a couple of rather “steaming” scenes but still not too over the top.
People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry: This delightful novel is a perfect summer read, filled with witty banter, steamy romance, and gorgeous descriptions of idyllic vacation spots like New York, San Francisco, and Palm Springs. The story follows Poppy and Alex, best friends who take a yearly vacation together, as they try to rekindle their relationship after a falling out. As they travel through picturesque cities, they explore their feelings and learn more about each other than they ever expected.
Love Radio by Ebony Ladelle: This novel tells the story of Maya, a radio host who becomes embroiled in a dangerous love triangle with two of her coworkers. In truth, I started listening but didn’t finish it. It’s a very young story about high schoolers. Not my cup of tea.
.
Mystery/Thriller
The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley: Set in the glittering world of 1990s Paris, this novel follows a young woman named Jess as she tries to figure out the secrets of a group of people living in an old apartment building. This is a mystery that keeps you guessing until the very end. Loved this book. It’s a captivating read.
❤️ The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides: This is the best book of the bunch. This psychological thriller is a page-turner from beginning to end, with a gripping plot that keeps you guessing until the final twist. The story follows a criminal psychotherapist named Theo, who becomes obsessed with uncovering the truth behind the mysterious murder of a famous photographer. With complex characters, unexpected plot twists, and a dark, brooding atmosphere, The Silent Patient is a must-read.
.
Fiction
Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus: This clever, witty novel follows the story of a brilliant scientist named Darcy, who struggles to navigate the sexist world of academia while trying to gain respect as a chemist. It’s light and enjoyable reading especially for those of us who like to see female advancement.
These Silent Woods by Kimi Cunningham Grant: You may not agree with the decisions taken by the father in this story, but they force you to consider what you’d do if faced by the same circumstances. This story is absorbing. I enjoyed it completely.
